The Italian government has denied reports suggesting that Rome is negotiating with Iran to secure safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Officials said there are no bilateral talks or agreements with Tehran aimed at guaranteeing transit for Italian ships.

Recent media reports had suggested that some European countries were exploring diplomatic channels with Iran to ensure the safe movement of merchant vessels through the strategic waterway as security risks escalate in the region. Italian authorities, however, said claims that Rome was conducting such negotiations are unfounded.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints for energy trade. A significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passes through the narrow passage, making any disruption a major concern for global energy markets. Rising security threats and recent attacks on vessels have already pushed shipping costs and insurance premiums sharply higher.

Tensions in the region escalated following military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, triggering retaliatory threats and warnings from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards about vessel movements in the area. The heightened risk has disrupted shipping flows and added volatility to global oil markets, prompting close monitoring by governments and energy traders worldwide.
