Iran War Pushes European Energy Prices Higher, Inflation Shock May Be Limited

The war in Iran has shaken global energy markets and lifted oil and gas prices in Europe. Analysts say the shock may still fall short of the inflation surge seen after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The escalation of the conflict involving Iran has triggered renewed volatility in global energy markets, driving oil and natural gas prices higher across Europe. Security risks around the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for global energy trade through which roughly one‑fifth of the world’s oil flows, have raised concerns about potential supply disruptions. Brent crude prices briefly moved back above the 100‑dollar‑per‑barrel level, while benchmark Dutch TTF natural gas prices in Europe also recorded sharp gains.

The surge in energy costs has revived fears that Europe could face a renewed inflationary shock similar to the one experienced in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Economists warn that if elevated energy prices persist, inflation in the European Union could climb above the 3% level, complicating the outlook for monetary policy and potentially forcing central banks to reassess interest‑rate plans.

However, many analysts argue that the current shock may prove less severe than the 2022 energy crisis. Europe has significantly diversified its energy supplies in recent years by expanding LNG imports, strengthening storage levels and reducing reliance on Russian gas. These structural changes are expected to cushion the economic impact of new supply disruptions.

Market observers emphasize that the duration of the conflict will be decisive. A prolonged disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz or broader damage to energy infrastructure in the Middle East could still intensify price pressures. For now, though, the rise in energy prices remains well below the extreme spikes seen during the peak of Europe’s previous energy crisis.
