Iran’s New Supreme Leader Wounded, Likely Disfigured
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded and likely disfigured following U.S. and Israeli strikes amid the escalating conflict.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has been wounded and is “likely disfigured,” according to remarks made during a Pentagon briefing as the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel intensifies.
Hegseth stated that the ongoing military operations have significantly degraded Iran’s military capabilities. According to the Pentagon, Iran’s missile launch capacity has fallen by roughly 90%, while its drone strike capability has dropped by about 95%. The defense secretary also noted that more than 15,000 targets have been struck since the war began in late February.
Iran’s leadership transition came after the death of long‑time Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed during the initial phase of the U.S.-Israeli strikes. Following his death, Iran’s Assembly of Experts selected his son Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new supreme leader.
Iran has not provided detailed confirmation regarding Mojtaba Khamenei’s health. However, he issued a written statement earlier vowing retaliation against U.S. and Israeli attacks. The escalating conflict and leadership uncertainty in Tehran are being closely watched by global markets due to potential risks for energy supplies and regional stability.
