U.S. President Donald Trump's call for Americans to accept higher gasoline prices, coupled with Iran's defiant stance on the Strait of Hormuz, has escalated tensions in global energy markets. President Trump stated that the public should "pay a tiny little bit more for your gasoline" as the cost of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, further announcing his intention to soon declare the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory. These remarks have deepened the ongoing conflict over the critical waterway and elicited a strong reaction from Iran.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi emphasized that Tehran would not be intimidated by threats, stating, "This strait will be opened and closed only under Iran's command, and so long as you do not accept the reality of defeat and stop indulging in fantasies, Iran will continue to enforce the blockade." These statements underscore the lack of progress in diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran, with oil tanker traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz nearing a standstill. This Middle East escalation marks the latest in a series of intensifying events between the two nations over approximately six months.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital chokepoint through which roughly 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments pass. The potential for long-term disruption in the strait has driven global oil prices upward. This week, Brent crude oil approached $90-$94 a barrel, while U.S. gasoline prices climbed to around $4-$4.46 a gallon. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude prices also traded near $88 a barrel. These increases translate to significant cost burdens for American consumers and businesses.

These developments pose a substantial political risk for President Trump ahead of the November midterm elections. The surge in fuel prices contradicts Trump's campaign promise to lower energy costs, while U.S. Democrats are seeking to weaponize the economic fallout from the conflict with Iran as an election issue. The U.S. administration has attempted to stabilize markets by offering political risk insurance to tankers and temporarily waiving certain oil-related sanctions. However, a blockade on Iranian ports has also been implemented.

Analysts predict that higher oil prices will lead to increased inflation, slower economic growth, and a rise in the unemployment rate by year-end. This situation strengthens expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) may adopt a more cautious approach to interest rate cuts or even consider rate hikes. As uncertainty persists in global energy markets, the trajectory of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz is anticipated to profoundly impact both geopolitical stability and economic equilibrium in the coming period.
