Semiconductor giant Intel has announced plans to raise $15 billion through a common stock offering, aiming to fund its costly chip contract manufacturing business and accelerate investments in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This strategic move comes as the company seeks to capitalize on a strong rally in its stock price, fueled by its ongoing turnaround efforts.

In an announcement made on Monday, the company stated that the net proceeds from the offering would be used for general corporate purposes, including capital expenditures and working capital. Intel, once a dominant force in the global chip industry, is now investing heavily in new facilities and advanced packaging capabilities to challenge industry leaders such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). In July, Intel raised its capital expenditure forecast for this year from $18 billion to over $20 billion and expects next year's spending to be “significantly above” this level.

Following the announcement, Intel's shares fell more than 4% in early trading, likely due to concerns about shareholder dilution. However, the company's stock has nearly tripled this year, outperforming rivals Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Nvidia, as well as the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index's roughly 75% rise. This robust performance had led several analysts to suggest that Intel's surging share price increased the likelihood of an equity raise to help fund its expansion plans.

Intel's turnaround strategy is heavily focused on revitalizing its contract chip manufacturing business, known as its foundry unit. The company is experiencing increased demand for central processing units (CPUs) driven by the shift towards AI agents, necessitating an expansion of its manufacturing capacity. The Intel Foundry unit has already secured Tesla as a 14A customer. This strategy reflects Intel's renewed commitment to physical engineering and manufacturing capabilities, after a period where the company's balance sheet was strained by an overemphasis on financial engineering.

Market experts view this equity raise as a logical step for a capital-intensive business like Intel, especially after a substantial increase in its stock price. This move is expected to support the company's goals of regaining technological leadership and establishing a stronger position in the global chip manufacturing market. In the coming period, the construction of new manufacturing facilities and the implementation of advanced technology processes will be crucial factors determining Intel's financial performance and competitive strength in the industry. The success of its intensive investments in the artificial intelligence sector will also be closely monitored.
