Indian Shares Rise as Oil Tumbles on Iran Deal Hopes

Indian equities commenced the week on a robust note, bolstered by a significant decline in crude oil prices. This downturn in oil prices followed reports that U.S. President Donald Trump had deferred a planned military strike on Iran and indicated that a diplomatic agreement was imminent. The renewed momentum in diplomatic efforts has fostered increased risk appetite across global markets, providing a general sense of relief regarding inflation and interest rate concerns.

President Trump announced that peace talks would resume, primarily after Middle Eastern allies, including Saudi Arabia, urged Washington to prioritize diplomatic solutions. He stated that the large-scale military strike against Iran was called off on the condition that efforts to swiftly reach an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resolve the impasse over Tehran's nuclear capabilities move forward. In response to these developments, Brent crude futures dropped by $4.08, or 4.6 percent, to $83.85 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell by $4.01, or 4.7 percent, to $80.66 a barrel.

The positive market sentiment was clearly reflected in India's benchmark indices. In early trade, the BSE Sensex advanced by 540 points, or 0.7 percent, reaching 78,634, while the broader NSE Nifty index gained 172 points, or 0.7 percent, to trade at 24,555. The decline in oil prices is particularly beneficial for an energy-import-dependent nation like India, as it helps alleviate inflationary pressures. Notable movements were observed in individual stocks, with ITC rallying 2.7 percent, Indian Oil Corporation surging 2.4 percent, IREDA rising about 2 percent, NCC gaining more than 2 percent, and Sterlite Technologies jumping 5 percent. Conversely, Maruti Suzuki fell around 2 percent, Sun Pharma declined 2.3 percent, Persistent Systems tumbled 3 percent, and ZEE Entertainment Enterprises plummeted 12 percent.

The de-escalation of tensions between Iran and the U.S. offers substantial relief to global energy markets. Uncertainties surrounding the safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program had recently exerted upward pressure on oil prices. Further contributing to the downward pressure on crude, OPEC+ (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies) approved an increase of approximately 188,000 barrels per day in oil production quotas starting from September. These developments are poised to enhance macroeconomic stability and provide greater policy flexibility for the Indian economy.

Analyst expectations suggest the prospects of a U.S.-Iran peace agreement are a significant positive for global risk assets. Rajesh Palviya, head of research at Axis Direct, commented, “The easing of geopolitical tensions following the US-Iran peace agreement is a significant positive for global risk assets. The immediate correction in crude oil prices is particularly encouraging for an import-dependent economy like India, as it helps alleviate inflationary pressures, improves macroeconomic stability, and provides greater policy flexibility.” However, some market observers, like IG market analyst Tony Sycamore, caution that the hopes for a deal could collapse if Iran “digs in its heels and continues to leverage its control over the Strait, potentially through an attack on a U.S. base or a tanker transiting the waterway.” Dilip Parmar, research analyst at HDFC Securities, noted that “The Indian rupee strengthened as a de-escalation in geopolitical tensions dragged both crude oil prices and the greenback lower.” Markets are expected to closely monitor the trajectory of diplomatic developments in the coming period.
