Escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran in the Middle East are reshaping strategic trade connectivity plans linking India and Europe. Analysts say that among India’s major connectivity initiatives, the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is increasingly seen as the most viable route under the current geopolitical environment.

The IMEC project aims to establish a multimodal trade and logistics network linking India with Europe through the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel. Announced during the G20 summit, the initiative includes ports, railways and energy infrastructure designed to improve supply‑chain integration between Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

By creating a faster and potentially more efficient route for goods movement, the corridor is expected to enhance trade efficiency, reduce transportation costs and strengthen supply‑chain resilience. Policymakers also view the initiative as a strategic infrastructure project that could reshape trade flows across the region.

In contrast, alternative routes such as the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which connects India to Europe via Iran and Russia, face greater geopolitical uncertainty due to regional tensions and security risks. With conflict affecting key shipping lanes and raising concerns about stability in West Asia, analysts argue that IMEC could become central to India’s long‑term trade strategy with Europe.
