IBM Lowers Full-Year Forecast, Boosts Productivity with Bob AI Tool

Technology giant IBM has stirred market concerns by lowering its revenue growth forecast for 2026. The company, while announcing its second-quarter financial results, revised its constant-currency annual revenue growth expectation from 'more than 5%' to a range of '4% to 5%'. This adjustment follows an unusual move by IBM last week to release preliminary second-quarter results and issue an earnings warning.

IBM's second-quarter performance fell short of Wall Street expectations. The company reported revenue of $17.16 billion, missing the consensus estimate of $17.86 billion. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) came in at $2.93, below analysts' projection of $3.01. On a constant-currency basis, revenue growth was recorded at just 1%. Segment-wise, the company's core Infrastructure division experienced a 7% decline, primarily driven by a sharp 42% plunge in Z mainframe sales. Software revenues saw a 5% increase, while the Consulting segment remained flat.

Company management attributed the revenue shortfall not to weaker customer demand, but to delays in closing dozens of large infrastructure deals. IBM also unveiled a new AI-powered coding tool named “Bob” to improve productivity. Already adopted by over 80,000 employees, this tool is seen as a crucial part of its long-term growth strategy. However, the market's focus remained on the slowdown in its core infrastructure business and the retreat from its annual growth target, rather than the expansion of new business areas.

These financial developments caused market volatility. IBM shares experienced a record 25% drop within a week following the preliminary earnings warning, and further declined by 2.15% at the close of regular trading after the full report. In after-hours trading, shares initially rose by about 3% before edging lower again. Analysts noted that it is rare for technology companies to provide preliminary figures ahead of an official earnings release, which negatively impacted investor confidence.

In a broader economic context, it is suggested that increased enterprise spending on AI infrastructure is crowding out budgets from IBM's higher-margin software and consulting offerings. This situation paints a complex picture of how the high interest in AI technologies is affecting companies' existing business models. Furthermore, the company is reportedly facing a securities fraud investigation concerning its sales pipeline disclosures, adding to existing concerns.

Analysts and market expectations highlight IBM's strong position in AI and its potential to maintain leadership in enterprise AI solutions with platforms like watsonx. Nevertheless, short-term weaknesses in the infrastructure business and delays in closing major deals are expected to limit the company's growth momentum. IBM management anticipates an acceleration in revenue growth in the second half of the year, maintaining confidence that AI will be a key long-term growth driver for the company.
