A fire that broke out early Sunday morning at Saudi Arabia's Jazan refinery in the southwestern part of the country has been brought under control, the Saudi Energy Ministry announced. While no injuries or casualties were reported, Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi militants claimed responsibility for the attack. This incident marks the latest in a series of ongoing threats to the region's critical energy infrastructure.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated on the X social media platform that they targeted the Jazan refinery with a drone, asserting the attack was a response to alleged Saudi drone incursions into northwestern Yemen. The Jazan refinery, strategically located on the Red Sea coast, has a processing capacity of 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil, producing products such as gasoline and ultra-low sulfur diesel.

This attack is at least the second incident targeting the Jazan refinery within the past month. In late July, the refinery was hit by Houthi attacks, which caused damage to the facility's Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) complex and tank farm area, leading to a temporary shutdown. Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser had stated last week that recent attacks had caused some production interruptions but expressed confidence that operations could be quickly restored, adding that the company had not seen a material operational or financial impact.

Global oil markets are highly sensitive to such tensions in the Middle East. Following previous Houthi attacks, crude oil prices surged above $100 per barrel in July. Given that the Jazan refinery has not exported any volumes since late July and recorded no shipments in August, this new attack could intensify concerns over energy supply, potentially exerting upward pressure on benchmark crude oil prices like Brent and WTI.

These attacks must be viewed within the broader economic and political context of the region. Iran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the Houthis' declaration of a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea are placing significant strain on global energy supply chains. The Red Sea route, particularly through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, has become vital for Saudi oil exports since the Strait of Hormuz disruption. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia's recent defense pact signed with Turkey and Pakistan on Friday is seen as an effort to establish collective deterrence against regional instability.

Analysts and market observers concur that such attacks heighten uncertainty regarding global energy supply security. Escalating tensions in the region could lead to increased insurance premiums for shipments traversing the Red Sea and higher energy costs. Despite Saudi Aramco's assurances of infrastructure redundancy, the persistent nature of these attacks continues to pose risks to global oil supply and price stability in the long term. Markets are expected to react to further developments.
