Hive Digital Shares Jump 10% on $220M Canada AI Infrastructure Deal
Hive Digital Technologies signed a three-year, $220 million GPU cloud contract with Bell Canada and Cohere. This deal accelerates the company's pivot from Bitcoin mining to high-performance AI computing, driving a 10% surge in its shares. It will contribute to Canada's goals of strengthening its AI infrastructure.
HIVE Digital Technologies (NASDAQ: HIVE) shares surged by 10% following the announcement of a monumental $220 million GPU cloud contract with Bell Canada and AI firm Cohere. This three-year agreement marks a significant turning point in HIVE's strategic shift from its origins as a Bitcoin mining company to focusing on high-performance artificial intelligence computing infrastructure.
Under the terms of the deal, HIVE's BUZZ High Performance Computing (HPC) unit will deploy 2,304 Nvidia Grace Blackwell (GB200) GPUs at Bell's AI Fabric facility in Merritt, British Columbia. This infrastructure is designed to provide a dedicated compute layer for Cohere's foundation models and enterprise AI products, serving Canadian government and corporate customers. HIVE anticipates the deployment to go live from late 2026 to early 2027, projecting an addition of approximately $70 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). With the company's current realized ARR standing at about $35 million, this new contract is expected to push its total contracted HPC revenue target beyond $100 million. The GPU purchases will be funded in part by the proceeds from its $115 million convertible note financing completed in April.
HIVE Digital Technologies' strategic pivot is part of a broader trend observed within the Bitcoin mining industry. As GPU-based mining became less profitable following Ethereum's transition to a Proof-of-Stake model in 2022, companies like HIVE repurposed their existing GPU infrastructure for AI and HPC workloads. This transition has been accelerated by Wall Street's increasing valuation of AI-driven revenues, attracting significant investor interest in companies making this shift.
The agreement also supports Canada's ambition to build a sovereign AI infrastructure. HIVE has emphasized that all infrastructure will remain within Canada and operate under Canadian standards. This positions the project as a component of a broader national strategy aimed at maintaining domestic control over sensitive AI data, models, and compute capacity. The initiative seeks to reduce Canada's reliance on foreign-controlled artificial intelligence technologies.
Analysts and market observers note that this contract solidifies HIVE's position in the burgeoning AI cloud services market. The company's strategic transformation is seen as having the potential to decouple its stock valuation from the volatility of cryptocurrency markets. However, execution risks remain, including the timely procurement, integration, and online activation of the Nvidia GB200 systems. Long-term success will hinge on the company's ability to successfully deliver on this contract and secure similar deals in the future.
