Hapag-Lloyd container ship struck near UAE’s Jebel Ali port
A container ship sailing off the UAE coast was hit by an unidentified projectile, causing minor damage and a small onboard fire. The incident occurred north of Dubai’s Jebel Ali port.
A container vessel operating near the coast of the United Arab Emirates was struck by an unidentified projectile, according to a report from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident occurred about 35 nautical miles north of Jebel Ali, one of the region’s largest commercial ports located near Dubai.
UKMTO said the ship’s master reported that the vessel sustained damage after being hit by the projectile, which also triggered a small fire onboard. The blaze was reportedly brought under control quickly and all crew members were confirmed safe. Authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage.
The incident comes amid heightened security risks for commercial shipping routes in and around the Strait of Hormuz. Several recent maritime security advisories have warned of attacks or suspicious activity targeting merchant vessels in the Gulf region.
The area is one of the world’s most strategically important shipping corridors, handling a significant share of global energy and container trade. Analysts say any escalation of attacks on commercial vessels could increase shipping costs, insurance premiums and logistical disruptions across global supply chains.
