Gumi and SBI Launch ¥3 Billion Bitcoin and Altcoin Fund
Japanese game developer Gumi, in collaboration with SBI Financial Services, is launching a ¥3 billion Bitcoin and altcoin fund. This initiative aims to strengthen the institutional crypto market in Japan, aligning with Gumi's expanding crypto holdings. The fund, set to commence operations on August 1, 2026, will primarily invest in Bitcoin and major altcoins.
Japanese game developer Gumi (gumi Inc.) and financial giant SBI Financial Services are making a significant move in the crypto asset market by establishing a new Bitcoin and altcoin fund worth approximately ¥3 billion (around $18 million). Named "SBI Crypto Fund I," this private fund is set to begin operations on August 1, 2026, and aims to bridge the gap with Japan's institutional crypto market.
The fund will primarily invest in Bitcoin (BTC) and major listed altcoins. Its investment strategies include staking to generate returns, portfolio rebalancing to optimize asset allocation based on market conditions, and hedging to mitigate price volatility risks. SBI Crypto Fund LLC, the entity managing the fund, is 51% owned by SBI Financial Services, with the remaining 49% held by gC Labs, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gumi. Daiwa Securities Group and several other unnamed investors have also committed capital to the fund.
Gumi's engagement and investments in crypto assets have significantly expanded recently. As of April 30, 2026, the company's crypto holdings reached ¥14.13 billion, marking an approximately 86% increase from ¥7.58 billion a year prior. Gumi's crypto business strategy is particularly centered around active holdings of XRP, portfolio management services through Hinode Technologies, and investment fund operations. The company had previously adopted XRP as a corporate treasury asset after approving a ¥1 billion Bitcoin purchase.
The launch of this new fund is seen as part of Gumi's strategic pivot from its traditional mobile game development business towards crypto asset management. SBI's investment in Gumi since 2023 and its strategic guidance have played a crucial role in this shift. The company aims to become Japan's largest XRP holding and operating company. This development underscores the growing interest of institutional investors and corporations in Japan's digital asset market.
One of the primary objectives of the fund is to connect Japan's corporate sector with the crypto market and build an operational track record in anticipation of the potential future approval of crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in Japan. The Japan Financial Services Agency (FSA) has been discussing regulatory changes that could eventually allow spot crypto ETFs, with the first Bitcoin ETF possibly launching by 2028. This fund is regarded as a preparatory step by Gumi and SBI for this potential market opening.
Market analysts anticipate that such institutional funds could accelerate the integration of the crypto market into Japan's mainstream financial system. This fund, with its focus on Bitcoin and major altcoins, is expected to attract new institutional capital into the country's digital asset ecosystem. However, due to its private structure and initial limited size, a significant immediate impact on the broader market is not expected. In the long term, such collaborations could positively influence the regulatory framework and institutional adoption of crypto assets in Japan.
