Google Gemini Expands at Pentagon; DOD: 'One-model reliance risky'
After Anthropic was blacklisted, the Pentagon expanded use of Google Gemini. CDAO Cameron Stanley warned excessive dependence on a single model is risky.

The Pentagon has expanded its use of Google’s Gemini models on its enterprise AI portal following the blacklisting and legal dispute with Anthropic, with Gemini-based agents being rolled out more widely across certain DoD workstreams.
Pentagon Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer Cameron Stanley confirmed in media interviews that the Department of Defense is increasing its reliance on Gemini for a range of tasks and emphasised that overreliance on any single model or vendor is not advisable. The move follows tensions with Anthropic after the company resisted certain military use cases and faced a supply-chain-risk designation.
Operationally, the expansion refers to adding Gemini-powered agents and low-code tools to GenAI.mil and similar platforms, accelerating adoption for unclassified and controlled workflows while testing integrations with research and field units. These deployments aim to scale AI capabilities across the department more rapidly.
For markets and the tech sector, expanded Pentagon engagement with Gemini could alter revenue trajectories and contract pipelines for Alphabet over time, while raising governance and reputational questions that investors will monitor. Government endorsements and platform approvals typically attract investor attention but also bring regulatory and ethical scrutiny.
Analysts say the immediate effect is likely a shift in defense AI procurement toward a more diversified vendor mix and tighter contractual terms on use cases; over the medium term, expectations are for clearer standards around national-security uses of generative AI, stronger oversight mechanisms and renewed focus on robustness and red-teaming by providers. Market participants will watch contract disclosures and any earnings commentary from Alphabet for signals about commercial benefits.
