GE Vernova's $176 Billion Backlog Amidst Wall Street Sell-Off
GE Vernova reported a record $176 billion backlog and robust revenue growth in Q2 2026. However, its stock dipped on Wall Street due to an earnings per share miss and concerns over potential tariffs, despite the company raising its full-year guidance.

GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV), a leading player in the energy sector, announced its financial results for the second quarter of 2026, revealing a record-breaking backlog of $176 billion. Despite this strong performance, the company's stock experienced a decline on Wall Street. Investors reacted cautiously to the company missing its earnings per share (EPS) expectations and concerns regarding potential future tariff impacts.
For the quarter ending June 30, 2026, GE Vernova reported revenues of $11.1 billion, surpassing analyst expectations. This figure represents a significant 22% increase year-over-year. The company recorded new orders totaling $24.2 billion, demonstrating an 88% organic growth, primarily driven by its Power and Electrification segments. However, the reported EPS of $2.47 fell short of the consensus estimate of $3.04.
Management, buoyed by strong order intake and increasing revenues, revised its financial outlook for the full year 2026 upwards. The full-year revenue guidance was raised to a range of $45.5 billion to $46.5 billion, while free cash flow expectations were increased to $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion. In the second quarter alone, the company generated $5.1 billion in free cash flow, contributing to a total of $9.9 billion in free cash flow for the first half of the year.
Despite these positive financial indicators, GE Vernova shares dropped by approximately 3% to 5% in premarket trading following the announcement. The market's focus was primarily on the company's EPS miss and its warning that global tariffs could potentially increase costs by $100 million to $200 million in 2026. Furthermore, ongoing challenges and increasing losses within the Wind energy segment also contributed to negative investor sentiment.
GE Vernova's Power and Electrification segments demonstrated robust growth, driven by surging demand from artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. The company's gas turbine equipment and grid infrastructure are playing a critical role in meeting the rapidly escalating energy requirements of AI-driven operations. Data center orders within the Electrification segment exceeded $5 billion in the first half of the year, more than doubling the total for 2025. In contrast, the Wind segment continued to face headwinds, with a 40% decline in orders and an EBITDA loss of $275 million.
Analysts and market observers note that GE Vernova's record backlog and strong free cash flow provide significant long-term revenue visibility. The company is well-positioned to capitalize on the electrification transition and the escalating demand from data centers. However, in the near term, tariff risks and the pace of recovery in the Wind segment are expected to be key factors influencing stock performance. Management's strategies for scaling production capacity and managing costs will be closely monitored in the upcoming periods.
