Forward Deployed Engineers Surge as AI Boom Creates New Tech Role
Demand for forward deployed engineers is rapidly rising as companies rush to implement AI. Job postings for the hybrid role jumped more than 800% in 2025.
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence across industries is driving demand for a new type of engineering role in the technology sector: the forward deployed engineer. The position combines software engineering expertise with direct work alongside customers to deploy complex AI systems in real business environments.
Data from hiring platforms shows that job postings for forward deployed engineers increased by more than 800% between January and September 2025. The surge reflects a growing realization among technology companies that building powerful AI models is only the first step; successfully integrating them into enterprise operations requires engineers who can work directly with clients.
Unlike traditional software engineers who typically build internal products, forward deployed engineers are embedded with customer teams. Their work often involves connecting AI systems with company databases, APIs and operational software, ensuring the technology functions within existing infrastructure and delivers measurable business value.
The concept of forward deployment was popularized by data analytics firm Palantir Technologies, which began placing engineers directly with customers during large-scale deployments more than a decade ago. Today, AI companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Cohere are expanding similar teams as competition intensifies to bring advanced AI tools from the lab into real-world production environments.
