Ferrero Invests Billions to Build a Candy Empire in the US Market

Italian food giant Ferrero is pursuing an ambitious growth strategy in the North American market, pouring billions of dollars into strategic investments. The company, known for iconic brands like Nutella, Ferrero Rocher, and Kinder, is taking significant steps to develop products tailored to American consumer tastes and expand its distribution network. This strategy has propelled Ferrero to become the third-largest confectionery company in the U.S.

Ferrero's expansion in the U.S. is marked by a series of high-profile acquisitions and substantial infrastructure investments. In 2018, the company acquired Nestlé's U.S. confectionery business for $2.8 billion, adding brands such as Butterfinger, Baby Ruth, and 100 Grand to its portfolio. This was followed by the integration of Fannie May, Ferrara Candy (maker of Lemonheads and Brach's), and Kellogg's cookie and fruit snacks businesses, including Keebler and Famous Amos. More recently, in 2025, Ferrero acquired WK Kellogg Co for $3.1 billion, entering the breakfast cereal sector, and in 2026, it added the better-for-you brand Purely Elizabeth to its portfolio.

To boost production capacity and localize operations, Ferrero has invested billions in its U.S. facilities. The company opened its first North American chocolate processing plant, a 70,000-square-foot facility, in Bloomington, Illinois. Furthermore, a $214.4 million expansion project is underway at its existing Bloomington plant to enable the production of Kinder products in North America. A $75 million investment was made at its Franklin Park, Illinois facility for Nutella Peanut production. Through facility investments across Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, and Illinois, Ferrero has created over 1,000 new jobs in the past five years, growing its U.S. workforce to over 4,000 employees.

This expansion drive reinforces Ferrero's competitive position in the U.S. confectionery and packaged food market. The company is focusing on local production and developing products that cater to American preferences, aiming to increase its market share against established rivals like Hershey and Mars. The 45,000-square-foot Innovation Center and North America R&D Labs opened in Chicago in 2023 are a crucial part of this localization strategy. Here, new U.S.-specific products like Nutella Peanut are being developed. Ferrero has also invested over $100 million in marketing activities in the past year to accelerate brand awareness and market penetration.

As a privately-owned company, Ferrero benefits from the ability to make long-term strategic investments rather than focusing on short-term quarterly targets. For the financial year ending August 31, 2024, the company reported a consolidated turnover of EUR 18.4 billion, an 8.9% increase from the previous year. Strong performance in the U.S. market significantly contributed to this growth. Ferrero also enhances brand trust through corporate social responsibility initiatives, such as sustainably sourcing 100% of its cocoa and palm oil.

Analysts and market expectations suggest that Ferrero's aggressive growth strategy in North America will continue. The company is anticipated to solidify its market leadership through ongoing product innovation, expanded distribution channels, and increased operational capacity. Particularly, acquisitions of better-for-you brands like Purely Elizabeth are expected to strengthen Ferrero's presence in health-conscious categories and adapt to evolving consumer preferences. These steps will further cement Ferrero's position among global food giants.
