Ethereum Developers Narrow 66 Proposals for Hegotá Upgrade

Ethereum core developers are meticulously reviewing a multitude of proposals submitted for the Hegotá upgrade, a significant future step for the blockchain. This initial list of 66 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) will be narrowed down with the primary goal of strengthening the network's native privacy capabilities. Slated for 2027, Hegotá will follow Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade (scheduled for Q4 2026) and is set to bring substantial improvements to the network's fundamental architecture.

Among these proposals, EIP-8182 is particularly noteworthy, as it aims to create a protocol-managed shielded pool for native privacy transfers of ETH and ERC-20 tokens. This mechanism, proposed by Facet co-founder Tom Lehman, would allow users to conduct transactions without publicly exposing sender, recipient, and amount details. Furthermore, Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists (FOCIL - EIP-7805), designed to enhance censorship resistance, has already been selected as one of Hegotá's key features.

The scope of the proposals extends beyond privacy and censorship resistance to include scalability and Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) optimizations. Developers are addressing issues such as repricing data resources (EIP-8131, EIP-8279) and adjusting state growth costs (EIP-8368) in preparation for a future increase in the gas limit to 600 million. Additionally, other candidate upgrades include shorter block times, changes to issuance mechanisms, EVM optimization and simplification, and early discussions on zkEVM and post-quantum cryptography-related EIPs.

This extensive upgrade effort by Ethereum could significantly impact the network's overall utility and adoption. Enhanced privacy features may make Ethereum more attractive to institutional users and for sensitive financial transactions. Increased censorship resistance will strengthen the principle of decentralization, while scalability improvements will boost transaction capacity and positively affect user experience. These developments could unlock new opportunities for decentralized finance (DeFi) and other dApp ecosystems.

Growing demand for privacy within the blockchain ecosystem underscores the importance of upgrades like Hegotá. The current transparent nature of transactions on Ethereum, while supporting auditability, often falls short in meeting privacy needs for many use cases such as payroll, donations, or personal transfers. Ethereum aims to shift privacy from an optional add-on to a network-level default, thereby enhancing user data protection and censorship resistance.

Developers are expected to continue narrowing down the proposals in upcoming core developer meetings to decide which EIPs will ultimately be included in the upgrade. The selected proposals will undergo extensive testing on devnets and testnets before being deployed to the mainnet. Hegotá's launch in 2027 will mark a critical step towards making Ethereum a more secure, scalable, and privacy-focused platform, guiding the network's future evolution.
