The U.S. dollar drifted near multi-month lows against major currencies on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, as investors awaited the release of the Federal Reserve's (Fed) July meeting minutes later in the day. The dollar's depreciation was influenced by easing Treasury yields and recent softer economic data from the U.S., prompting market participants to seek fresh clues on the Fed's monetary policy path.

This decline was largely driven by growing expectations among market participants that the Fed might adopt a less aggressive stance on monetary tightening. Recent weeks have seen softer U.S. economic data, including unexpected job losses in July and mild inflation readings, which have led investors to significantly scale back their rate-hike bets. Although interest rates remained unchanged at the July FOMC meeting, the dissenting votes from three members in favor of a rate hike highlighted internal divisions within the committee.

According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the probability of a September rate hike has fallen from 65% to 35-36%, while the likelihood of rates remaining unchanged has risen to 64-65%. This shift has allowed currencies like the Euro, Sterling, and Japanese Yen to strengthen against the dollar. The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) saw a marginal decline, hovering around 99.55-99.65, near its two-month lows, while yields on benchmark U.S. 10-year and 30-year Treasury notes also continued to fall.

In the broader global market context, despite the softening U.S. economic data, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and uncertainties surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to push oil prices higher. Brent crude prices surged above $91 per barrel, keeping inflation risks elevated. This situation complicates the Fed's monetary policy decisions and has contributed to a global sell-off in bond markets, pushing long-term government bond yields to multi-year highs.

Analysts and market experts are closely scrutinizing the Fed minutes for a clearer outlook on the future of monetary policy. Some experts suggest that factors such as high energy prices and rising 30-year U.S. Treasury yields could support the dollar in the short term, indicating that it might be too early to chase the dollar's decline. Investors will also be closely monitoring speeches by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at the upcoming Jackson Hole symposium later this month.

Upcoming U.S. labor market data and inflation reports will further shape interest rate expectations ahead of the Fed's September meeting. The market is expected to focus on signals from the minutes regarding how the Fed plans to balance its efforts to control inflation with supporting economic growth.
