Dogecoin Speculation Returns to October 2025 Levels Amid 70% Price Drop
Dogecoin futures positioning has rebounded to October 2025 levels, when the token traded at three times its current price. Bullish bets now outnumber bearish ones by more than three to one.

The Dogecoin (DOGE) futures market is witnessing a remarkable resurgence in speculative activity, with open interest climbing back to levels last observed in October 2025, despite the cryptocurrency having lost approximately 70% of its value over the past year. The total value of outstanding futures contracts, known as open interest, has surged to an impressive $1.21 billion.
Dogecoin's spot price has experienced a significant decline over the last year, dropping to around 7 cents. In stark contrast, during October 2025, the token was trading at roughly 25 cents. Despite this substantial price depreciation, the number of DOGE coins involved in open futures contracts is currently nearing its October 2025 peak. Data from major cryptocurrency exchanges such as Binance and OKX indicates that long positions, which bet on a price increase, currently outnumber short positions by a ratio of more than three to one.
This growing divergence between a falling spot price and an increasing number of leveraged long positions introduces considerable risk into the market. Should Dogecoin's price continue its downward trajectory, these leveraged bets could face forced liquidations, triggering automatic closures of positions. Such a scenario would likely introduce additional selling pressure, potentially driving prices even lower.
Dogecoin is predominantly perceived as a speculative asset, with its price movements often driven more by community engagement and social media hype rather than underlying technological utility or real-world use cases. Historically, endorsements and tweets from prominent figures like Elon Musk have ignited massive rallies in DOGE's price, though these surges have often proven to be transient. The token's inherent reliance on speculation makes it particularly susceptible to external influences and rapid price swings.
Market analysts are cautioning that the current imbalance in futures positioning could lead to heightened market volatility and potential price corrections. While some long-term price predictions suggest a possible recovery for DOGE, the inherent speculative nature of the meme coin market, coupled with its lack of clear utility beyond speculation, necessitates investor caution. The prevailing market structure suggests that excessive bullish sentiment from investors could precipitate significant liquidation waves in the event of a sustained price downturn.
