DefiLlama Delays Mobile App Launch Over Phishing Apps on Apple Store
DeFi analytics platform DefiLlama postponed its mobile app launch due to phishing applications found on the Apple App Store. Founder 0xngmi stated Apple removed the fake application only days after evidence of a wallet drain was provided.

Decentralized finance (DeFi) analytics platform DefiLlama was forced to delay the official launch of its mobile application for months due to the proliferation of fake phishing apps impersonating the platform on the Apple App Store. The platform's pseudonymous founder, 0xngmi, revealed that Apple only took action to remove these fraudulent applications after the DefiLlama team intentionally demonstrated a crypto wallet drain.
According to 0xngmi's statements, the DefiLlama team had reported the fake apps to Apple for months, citing trademark infringement and impersonation, but these complaints went unaddressed. Faced with Apple's inaction, 0xngmi resorted to an unconventional method. He loaded a small crypto wallet with funds, downloaded the fake app, and allowed it to drain the wallet. After presenting this concrete evidence to Apple, the malicious application was removed from the App Store within days.
The fake applications were designed to gain access to users' crypto assets by requesting their seed phrases. 0xngmi stated that the same scammers managed to bypass Apple's identity verification processes by registering under defunct companies. This incident follows similar phishing attempts that have targeted other major crypto brands, such as Rabby wallet and Curve Finance. In November 2023, a fake Ledger Live app on the Microsoft Store also reportedly led to the theft of $588,000.
This development once again highlights security concerns within digital app marketplaces and the inherent risks of scams targeting cryptocurrency users. The fact that legitimate DeFi projects must resort to such elaborate measures to protect users from fraud before launching their own applications deepens trust issues within the sector. As user confidence in app stores erodes, this situation could negatively impact the overall perception of the DeFi ecosystem.
Given the irreversible nature of crypto transactions, such phishing attacks have the potential to cause significant financial losses for users. DefiLlama's experience raises important questions about the effectiveness of security protocols and complaint mechanisms of centralized platforms, such as app stores like Apple's. The continuous evolution of scamming tactics necessitates constant vigilance from both platform providers and crypto companies.
Analysts and market observers suggest that such incidents underscore the need for users to exercise greater caution in protecting their digital assets. It is emphasized that official applications should only be acquired through links provided on the project's official website or social media channels. In the coming period, app stores are expected to further tighten their verification processes for crypto-related applications and enhance their mechanisms for combating fraud. Such security vulnerabilities may also increase regulators' interest in the digital asset markets.
