Deere agrees $99M right-to-repair settlement; farmers remain wary
Deere agreed to a $99 million settlement in a class-action right-to-repair case and pledged 10 years of digital tool access, but farmers express lingering doubts.
Deere & Company has agreed to put $99 million into a settlement fund to resolve a U.S. class-action lawsuit accusing the company of restricting access to repair tools and inflating repair costs; the deal still requires court approval.
According to the filing, the proposed settlement covers customers who paid Deere or its authorized dealers for large-equipment repairs from Jan. 10, 2018, onward, and includes a commitment to make available for 10 years the digital tools needed for maintenance, diagnosis and repair of tractors, combines and similar machinery. The agreement also contains injunctive elements intended to broaden repair resources.
Market reaction was muted-to-positive as investors weighed the one-time cash payment against Deere’s wider profitability and dealer economics; some market notes flagged that while the headline figure is material, it is not likely to be a lasting earnings shock, though the operational implications for aftermarket revenue remain uncertain.
Despite the settlement language, a number of independent technicians and farmers say day-to-day repair obstacles persist—particularly around software-based functions such as reprogramming or advanced diagnostics that have long required dealer intervention. Those on-the-ground accounts suggest the deal may offer symbolic progress but not immediate, wholesale change in repair practices.
Analysts note the agreement could reduce some near-term legal risk for Deere but emphasize that separate enforcement action by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and other ongoing litigation may further shape industry practice. Observers will watch whether the promised ten-year tool access is implemented in ways that materially lower downtime and genuine repair costs for farmers; until then, farmer skepticism and regulatory scrutiny are likely to keep the issue in focus.
