Crypto Trader Loses $24 Million in 12-Second Ether Short Liquidation

The inherent risks of leveraged trading in cryptocurrency markets were highlighted once again as a prominent trader, known on the decentralized derivatives platform Hyperliquid as "pension-usdt.eth," incurred an approximate $24 million loss on August 20, 2026. This substantial loss resulted from the forced liquidation of a 50,000 ETH short position, which unraveled in a mere 12 seconds amidst a sharp rally in Ether (ETH) prices, triggering a cascading effect across the broader crypto market.

The short position had been maintained for over two months, predicated on the expectation of declining Ether prices. However, a market-wide rally, initiated by an unexpected announcement from the U.S. Treasury Department to expand its longer-term bond buyback program, propelled Ether's price upward by approximately 18% within 24 hours. This rapid appreciation pushed the "pension-usdt.eth" wallet's position beyond its liquidation threshold. According to Hyperliquid's trading records, the liquidation process commenced at 04:51:03 UTC and concluded by 04:51:15 UTC. During this brief 12-second window, five distinct forced sales were executed at escalating price points, including approximately $2,194, $2,210, $2,214, and $2,237, to close out the position.

In the final stages of the liquidation, the remaining 1,417 ETH could not find buyers in the order book and was subsequently absorbed by Hyperliquid's dedicated backstop liquidation fund. This scenario created what traders refer to as a "liquidation feedback loop." As closing a short position necessitates buying back the underlying asset, each forced purchase consumed available sell-side liquidity, thereby driving prices higher and making successive portions of the position progressively more expensive to unwind.

The incident had a significant ripple effect on the wider cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin (BTC) surged past $72,000, while Ether climbed above the $2,200 mark. In total, over $2.73 billion in crypto short positions were liquidated within 24 hours. This marked the largest wave of forced short closures recorded since October 2025, or even 2021, underscoring the extreme volatility that can characterize leveraged positions during periods of rapid price movement.

The U.S. Treasury's bond buyback announcement was perceived by the market as an indirect signal of quantitative easing. This development fueled risk appetite, increasing interest in scarce assets like cryptocurrencies. Furthermore, institutional inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs and Ether ETFs also contributed to the market's upward momentum. These events illustrate the rapid shifts in market sentiment and the increasing influence of macroeconomic factors on crypto assets.

Analysts caution that such squeeze-driven rallies may prove fragile. The "pension-usdt.eth" wallet had a notable track record, having accumulated approximately $49 million in profits from bearish crypto bets earlier in the year. However, this single liquidation effectively erased about half of those accumulated gains. This serves as a stark reminder that even highly experienced traders can face substantial risks from swift and unexpected price movements in leveraged markets. Market participants are once again emphasizing the critical importance of robust risk management strategies in a high-volatility environment.
