Cotton Futures Maintain Upward Momentum Amid Global Market Shifts
Cotton futures posted gains at Monday's midday, accompanied by increases in crude oil prices and the US Dollar Index. The latest Commitment of Traders (COT) report indicated a substantial rise in managed money's net long positions in cotton.
Cotton futures registered an increase of 34 to 63 points at Monday's midday. This upward movement coincided with crude oil prices rising by another 24 cents per barrel and the US Dollar Index advancing by 0.239 points. Market participants are closely monitoring the volatility in commodity markets, influenced by recent geopolitical tensions and supply-demand dynamics.
The Commitment of Traders (COT) report, released Friday afternoon, revealed that managed money speculative funds significantly increased their net long positions in cotton futures and options contracts. In the week ending on Tuesday, funds added another 10,578 contracts to their net long, bringing the total to 49,684 contracts. This suggests that speculative investors continue to anticipate further price appreciation in cotton. According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), old crop cotton commitments stood at 11.951 million running bales (RB) as of July 9, representing 102% of the USDA's export projection. Accumulated shipments reached 10.398 million RB, fulfilling 88% of the USDA's target.
The broader upward trend in commodity markets was particularly bolstered by escalating tensions in the Middle East. The intensifying conflict between the United States and Iran has amplified the supply risk premium for global energy, driving oil prices higher. Brent crude surged by 3.3% to $90.97 per barrel in Asian trading on Monday. Concurrently, the US Dollar Index (DXY) gained strength, climbing above the 100 level, attributed to safe-haven demand stemming from Middle Eastern security concerns and expectations of a hawkish stance from the Federal Reserve (Fed).
Concerns over adverse weather conditions also continue to impact cotton prices. Below-average monsoon rains anticipated in India are delaying planting, while deteriorating crop conditions in key U.S. cotton-producing regions, particularly Texas, keep yield risks in focus. This situation acts as a supportive factor for prices, driven by worries about potential global cotton supply shortages.
Analysts and market expectations suggest that geopolitical risks and global economic conditions will sustain volatility in commodity markets. The potential for rising oil prices to fuel inflationary pressures is also shaping expectations regarding the Fed's interest rate policies. Although Fed officials have entered a 'blackout period' ahead of next week's Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, markets are pricing in a high probability of a rate hike in September. In the cotton market, continued supply concerns and speculative interest are expected to provide ongoing price support in the near term.
