Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has argued that the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) will not diminish the importance of cryptocurrencies; instead, it will form the bedrock of a new financial era he terms "Agentic Finance." According to Armstrong, autonomous AI agents will necessitate programmable, real-time financial infrastructures that transcend the limitations of traditional financial systems. In line with this vision, Coinbase's Layer-2 network, Base, in conjunction with the x402 payment protocol and the USD-pegged stablecoin USDC, has reportedly processed over 100 million AI transactions.

Armstrong stated that while AI provides programmable intelligence, cryptocurrencies offer programmable money, and the combination of these two will give rise to a new economic model he calls "Agentic Finance." He emphasized that traditional banking systems are ill-suited for the instantaneous and micro-transactions required by AI agents, citing hurdles such as bank account opening requirements, identity verification processes, and multi-day international transfer delays as insurmountable for AI agents. To address this, Coinbase's x402 protocol on the Base network facilitates payments for services like API access, data feeds, and computing resources in stablecoins, settling in seconds.

The Base network is rapidly growing, becoming a pivotal backbone for machine-to-machine commerce. It recorded over 20 million agentic payment transfers in a single 90-day window, with cumulative agentic transactions reaching approximately 169 million as of July 2026. The vast majority of these transactions occur via the x402 standard, enabling AI agents to autonomously pay for online services. Coinbase is introducing new products that allow businesses to accept USDC payments directly from AI agents and has also developed automated trading commands for AI agents. Notably, agent traffic on Base's documentation pages surpassed human traffic last month.

This development also adds a new dimension to the ongoing debate in the tech sector about a "pivot from crypto to AI." Armstrong explicitly rejected this notion, asserting that crypto is a general-purpose infrastructure, akin to electricity or the internet, that supports the growth of AI rather than competing with it. It is anticipated that AI agents will emerge as independent economic actors in the future, holding their own funds, making payments, raising capital, and managing assets, thereby becoming a significant part of the financial ecosystem.

Analysts and market observers suggest that this trend could lead to fundamental changes in the financial services sector. Armstrong predicts that AI agents will eventually conduct far more transactions daily than all of humanity combined. Expectations also include AI agents eventually taking over all personal finance tasks, such as tax planning, portfolio rebalancing, and bill payments. Coinbase continues to develop infrastructure to bring this "Agentic Finance" vision to fruition.
