The competition in the artificial intelligence (AI) market is intensifying, and a recent "State of AI Apps 2026" report by Sensor Tower has revealed a notable finding. According to the report, Anthropic's Claude app is surpassing OpenAI's market-leading ChatGPT in terms of revenue generated per user, thereby reshaping monetization dynamics within the sector.

Sensor Tower's analysis shows that the Claude app generates an average of $2.76 in revenue per user, while ChatGPT's figure stands at $1.74. This indicates that Claude earns approximately 1.5 times more revenue per user than ChatGPT. Furthermore, 13% of Claude's iOS users pay for a subscription, compared to 8% for ChatGPT. This suggests that Claude appeals to a more niche but higher-value user base.

Despite ChatGPT crossing 1 billion monthly active users last month (May 2026), making it the fastest app in history to reach this milestone, it has experienced a decline in market share. In March, its share of the AI-assistant market dropped below 50% for the first time, a significant decrease from 81% two years prior. Concurrently, Claude's global market share increased from 5.1% in February to 10% by April. Claude's year-over-year monthly active user growth rate was approximately 640%, far exceeding ChatGPT's 62% growth.

A key reason for Claude's superior revenue per user is its pricing strategy. Claude does not offer a low-cost subscription tier; its plans start at $20 per month, attracting more engaged and willing-to-pay users. In contrast, rivals like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini offer low-cost options to achieve broader scale, which dilutes their average revenue per user.

Broader economic and political contexts also underpin these developments. Following OpenAI's agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense in March, there was a reported 202% spike in ChatGPT app uninstalls, with Claude being a primary beneficiary. This highlights users' sensitivity to the ethical stances and collaborations of AI companies. Overall, consumer spending on generative AI apps is projected to reach $4.25 billion in the first half of 2026.

Analysts and market expectations suggest that competition in the AI market will intensify further. While Sensor Tower's data primarily reflects consumer app revenues, it indicates that Anthropic is securing a strong position, particularly in enterprise and higher-value user segments. Moving forward, AI companies will likely need to balance strategies for building broad user bases with effective monetization to sustain growth.
