Boston Fed President Collins: Rates Should Remain Steady for a While

Boston Fed President Susan M. Collins said policymakers should keep interest rates at current levels “for a while” amid ongoing inflation concerns and economic uncertainty. She emphasized a patient, data-dependent approach to monetary policy.

Collins made the remarks in her opening comments at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston’s 2026 Technology-Enabled Disruption Conference, an event focused on how innovations in technology and payments affect the broader economy. In the speech she linked technological change to shifts in productivity, employment and inflation dynamics that policymakers must consider.

Recent U.S. inflation readings reinforced the view that the Federal Reserve may hold policy rates for an extended period. April consumer price data surprised to the upside, strengthening market expectations that the Fed will remain cautious about cutting rates until clearer disinflation is visible. That backdrop has pushed markets to price a slower path to easing.

Within the Fed, Collins’ comments reflect a broader, data-driven debate over the timing and size of future moves; officials have repeatedly signalled that any decision to ease policy will hinge on convincing progress toward the 2% inflation target. Collins noted that while future rate cuts remain possible, the bar for easing is relatively high and will depend on incoming data.

Market strategists say Collins’ tone reduces the likelihood of near-term easing but does not eliminate the prospect of gradual cuts if inflation and labour-market indicators normalize. Investors will monitor core inflation measures, wages and employment releases closely; these data points are likely to determine whether the Fed maintains its hold or begins to pivot later in the year.
