Boltz Suspends Service Amid Surge in AI-Assisted Cyberattacks

Boltz, a non-custodial Bitcoin swap provider, has announced the indefinite suspension of its services due to a significant increase in AI-assisted cyberattacks targeting its infrastructure. The company stated that attackers are discovering and adapting exploits at a faster pace than its small development team can identify and patch them, making it impossible to continue services responsibly.

In its statement, Boltz reported a steady rise in automated, AI-assisted probing of its infrastructure over recent months, which has led to several exploits. While each of these incidents was contained, the company emphasized that the pace of attacks has drastically accelerated in recent days, outpacing Boltz's ability to deploy fixes. The protocol confirmed it is being actively targeted by what appear to be multiple resourceful groups and cannot responsibly re-enable its swap services under these conditions.

The direct market impact of this development has caused disruptions for other Bitcoin firms that rely on Boltz's services. For instance, companies like Bull Bitcoin and Aqua Wallet, which utilize Boltz for Lightning and Liquid swaps, have reported issues with payments due to the service interruption. Boltz explicitly stated that no user funds were ever at risk due to its non-custodial design, which ensures users retain full control of their assets during swaps, and that the company absorbed all operational losses. They also confirmed that their API remains available for cooperative refunds, and unilateral refunds can be processed independently of Boltz's infrastructure.

Boltz's decision underscores growing concerns within the cryptocurrency ecosystem regarding the role of artificial intelligence in cyberattacks. This incident follows closely on the heels of the Coldcard hardware wallet exploit, which reportedly resulted in the theft of over $100 million worth of Bitcoin, also believed to be linked to AI-powered software. Such events highlight the challenges faced by smaller, open-source teams in defending against sophisticated AI-backed attackers. Boltz described this situation as a “major paradigm shift for Bitcoin services operating on an open-source stack.”

Industry analysts and market experts suggest that AI attackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it difficult for small teams to keep pace. Yan Pritzker, co-founder of Swan, warned that the significant overhead of building and running enterprise-level security in the age of large language models (LLMs) could price out many innovative startups working on client-fund-related services. Lucas Ferreira, a former business developer at Lightning Labs, stressed the need for more funding in the open-source space to maintain secure and resilient infrastructure. This situation reinforces calls for the development of “autonomous defense” systems to counter threats operating at machine speed.
