Bank of England (BoE) Governor Andrew Bailey has stated that international cooperation is crucial to address the rapidly evolving threats posed by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Speaking ahead of and during the traditional Mansion House dinner in London, Bailey warned that the United States would not be able to achieve its ambitions in this area alone. He stressed that no country could insulate itself from these risks due to the interconnected global nature of AI systems.

Bailey's comments follow the temporary ban by the former US President Donald Trump administration on foreigners using Anthropic's powerful Claude Mythos model. Although the ban was lifted weeks later, Bailey argued that such unilateral actions would be insufficient for cybersecurity defenses or establishing robust recovery plans. As Chair of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), Bailey addressed financial leaders, stating that stronger, coordinated testing of AI models is necessary before they are widely circulated.

Concerns have previously been raised that AI could pose systemic risks to the financial system, particularly regarding cybersecurity and operational resilience. The BoE is closely monitoring the potential and risks of AI in financial markets. AI is also accelerating the timeline for quantum computing to break the cryptographic foundations securing cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), XRP, Solana (SOL), and NEAR, posing a significant threat to blockchain security.

These developments indicate that AI is more than just a technological advancement; it carries significant implications in global economic and political contexts. Nations must develop common strategies to prevent AI from falling into the hands of malicious actors and to maintain financial stability. It has also been noted that unilateral actions by the US have hindered allies' pursuit of a joint approach.

Market analysts and regulators emphasize the need to be prepared for these threats. While blockchain networks are expected to accelerate their efforts towards post-quantum upgrades, international discussions on AI governance and regulation continue. Bailey's call underscores that both the opportunities and risks presented by AI must be addressed on a global scale, and increased cooperation in this area is anticipated in the coming period.
