Igor Runets, founder of BitRiver, one of Russia's largest cryptocurrency mining operators, has been charged with large-scale fraud for allegedly failing to deliver approximately $8 million (about 1 billion rubles) worth of crypto mining equipment. This development expands the criminal investigation against Runets, once again highlighting legal risks within Russia's digital asset sector.

According to investigators, Fox, a company controlled by Runets, signed a contract in 2023 to supply mining equipment to a company within the industrial group founded by businessman Oleg Deripaska, specifically a subsidiary of En+ Group. Although the buyer paid approximately $7.9 million upfront, the equipment was not delivered within the agreed-upon 32-day period. Prosecutors allege that Runets never intended to fulfill the agreement after receiving the payment and instead used the funds for personal spending.

Runets was initially placed under house arrest in early 2026 over separate tax-related allegations. However, on July 22, 2026 (or July 29, according to some reports), the Zamoskvoretsky District Court in Moscow moved Runets from house arrest to pretrial detention for at least two months following the new fraud charges. He faces charges under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Russian Criminal Code, which addresses 'large-scale fraud committed by an organized group,' potentially carrying a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

This development creates a significant trust deficit in Russia's crypto mining sector and exacerbates counterparty, supply-chain, and legal risks. Especially amidst international sanctions and regulatory uncertainties, such cases could deter cross-border investments and partnerships. Experts suggest that serious questions are being raised about due diligence standards for funds and platforms considering exposure to Russian mining capacity.

BitRiver, founded in 2017, is one of Russia's major cryptocurrency mining data center operators. Its parent company, Fox Group, controlled by Runets, is reportedly facing bankruptcy proceedings due to approximately $9.2 million in debt from undelivered equipment. BitRiver was also subjected to U.S. sanctions in 2022, which restricted its operations. This case signals a shift in the Russian crypto industry from expansion to liquidation and ownership changes.

Analysts anticipate that Runets' detention and BitRiver's legal woes could lead to further uncertainty in the Russian crypto mining market. It is emphasized that in jurisdictions where legal frameworks are ambiguous or poorly enforced, disputes over undelivered hardware can quickly escalate from civil matters to criminal cases. The progression of the case in the coming period will depend on physical examinations of the mining equipment and testimony from En+ representatives.
