BitMart Crypto Exchange to Wind Down Operations: Trading Ends August 26
Crypto exchange BitMart announced it will gradually wind down operations due to operational conditions. Trading will cease on August 26, 2026, with a full platform shutdown in January 2027. The decision led to a sharp decline in the BMX token.
Cryptocurrency exchange BitMart has announced its decision to commence an orderly wind-down of its trading platform operations, citing a careful evaluation of its operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction. This move adds to a series of recent closures in the crypto sector, highlighting the challenges faced by mid-tier exchanges. BitMart initiated the process by suspending new user registrations and crypto/fiat deposits as of July 26, 2026.
According to the exchange's announced timeline, new user registrations, cryptocurrency, and fiat deposits were halted from 01:30 UTC on July 26, 2026. Futures accounts transitioned to reduce-only mode, and new orders are no longer accepted in spot markets. Automated trading services, including copy trading, grid trading, and API trading, have also begun to be phased out. BitMart will discontinue all spot, futures, and other trading services at 01:00 UTC on August 26, 2026. Users have been strongly advised to close all open positions and submit withdrawal requests before this deadline.
The development exerted significant pressure on BitMart's native token, BMX. Following the announcement, the BMX token experienced a sharp decline of approximately 60% to 70% within 24 hours, causing concern among investors. Furthermore, some users reported delays in withdrawing funds from the exchange. BitMart stated that withdrawals remain open but might be subject to additional compliance and security reviews, such as identity verification, source-of-funds checks, and anti-money laundering (AML) protocols, potentially extending processing times. Arkham data indicated that crypto assets held in BitMart-attributed wallets decreased from approximately $102 million on July 6, 2026, to around $71 million on July 21, 2026.
BitMart's decision to wind down is seen as part of a growing trend in the crypto market in recent months. Other crypto trading platforms, such as BitMEX and Dango, have also announced their intentions to close operations following strategic reviews. This situation points to a challenging period for mid-tier crypto exchanges grappling with factors like regulatory pressures, declining trading volumes, and increasing competition. BitMart did not explicitly link its closure decision to a security breach, regulatory order, or insufficient customer assets, instead attributing it to general operational and market conditions.
Analysts and market observers suggest that such closures could lead to consolidation within the crypto ecosystem. BitMart is expected to officially terminate its full platform operations at 15:59 UTC on January 31, 2027. After this date, users will reportedly retain limited access to their accounts for a specified period to review historical records and submit withdrawal requests. However, users are strongly urged to transfer their assets to secure wallets as soon as possible to prevent potential issues. BitMart also issued a warning to users about potential scams exploiting the shutdown process.
