Bitcoin treasury playbook: Europe won’t simply copy Strategy model

Executives and participants at Paris Blockchain Week (PBW) said interest in Bitcoin as a corporate treasury asset is rising in Europe, but that the continent is unlikely to replicate the exact playbook used by Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy). PBW’s institutional program highlighted differences in market structure and regulatory expectations that shape how companies can adopt Bitcoin on their balance sheets.

Speakers pointed to Europe’s shallower capital markets and more stringent regulatory and corporate-governance constraints compared with the United States as key reasons for divergence. European firms such as The Blockchain Group (Capital B) have publicly signalled Bitcoin treasury strategies, illustrating growing adoption — yet executives stressed that financing channels, liquidity management and compliance will vary materially.

From a market-impact perspective, the mechanics of large, direct corporate Bitcoin purchases in the U.S. could create different price and liquidity dynamics if replicated in Europe. Analysts expect European adoption to rely more on staged purchases, regulated ETPs and tailored financing solutions rather than the large, balance-sheet-led accumulation seen in Strategy’s case, given the potential for market disruption in thinner order books.

In the broader policy context, ongoing European regulatory work — including reviews of the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework and efforts to formalize custody and market standards — is shaping corporate decision-making. PBW sessions emphasised that regulatory clarity and market infrastructure development are prerequisites for a sustainable European corporate Bitcoin ecosystem.

Looking ahead, market commentators expect a distinct European «Bitcoin treasury» model to emerge: one that balances strategic allocations to Bitcoin with stricter compliance, diversified execution channels and conservative liquidity management. While the U.S. experience with Strategy will remain an important reference point, European companies are likely to adapt the concept to local capital-market realities rather than copy it wholesale.
