Bitcoin Touches $65K as S&P 500 Rebounds Amid US-Iran Strait of Hormuz Rhetoric

Bitcoin (BTC) surged to the $65,000 level following the opening of US markets, capturing significant attention. This ascent occurred despite escalating rhetoric between the United States and Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz, coinciding with a rebound in the S&P 500 index from its two-week lows. Global markets displayed a complex picture, influenced by geopolitical risks in the Middle East and notable volatility in the US bond market.

As Bitcoin extended its weekly gains past the $65,000 threshold, the S&P 500 index bounced from 7,696 points, its lowest level since August 4. These developments were fueled by US President Donald Trump's posts on Truth Social. Trump shared a map depicting the Strait of Hormuz as “new US territory” and subsequently confirmed that the strait was “open and operating,” with “no talks or conversations” ongoing with Iran. Furthermore, Trump's threat of military action against Oman over its plans to collaborate with Iran on charging tolls for shipping traffic intensified the tensions. In July, ten consecutive days of US military strikes against Iran, met with Iranian retaliations on critical infrastructure, highlighted the persistent high tensions in the region. While a peace deal in June had previously led to a Bitcoin surge and a drop in oil prices, with reports of the Strait of Hormuz reopening, the current rhetoric suggests a reversal of that sentiment.

Market observations indicated that Bitcoin diverged from US equities in its movements. Although the S&P 500 index showed a rebound, the US government bond market experienced significant strain. The yield on 30-year US Treasury bonds surged to 5.34%, marking its highest level in 29 years, since January 2007. This prompted warnings from institutions like BNY Mellon regarding bond prices. Conversely, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil avoided major volatility, declining by 1% to around $84 per barrel. Despite Bitcoin reclaiming $65,000 in late July, the Crypto Fear & Greed Index remained in “Fear” territory, reflecting a cautious investor sentiment.

The strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world's daily oil supply flows, cannot be overstated for the global economy. The ongoing tensions between the US and Iran perpetuate concerns about instability in the region. Earlier in August, warnings about signs of “stagflation” (inflation within a stagnant economy) in the US also contributed to the overall market uncertainty. Additionally, the expiration of a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran, signed in June 2026, was also seen as a factor exacerbating the tensions.

Analysts are pointing to the sharp rise in 30-year US bond yields as a significant warning signal for the markets. Previously, Bitfinex analysts noted that Bitcoin had been trading within a consolidation zone between $62,500 and $72,000, without clear dominance from either bulls or bears. Furthermore, an analysis by Bitfinex Alpha emphasized the need for a more forceful move and volume-supported price action for a genuine market breakdown. In this context, market participants will continue to closely monitor the impact of geopolitical developments and macroeconomic data on the future direction of the markets.
