Bitcoin Touches $64,000 as HYPE Jumps 8% Weekly Amid Broader Crypto Weakness

A notable divergence has recently characterized the cryptocurrency markets, becoming more pronounced as Bitcoin (BTC) approached the $64,000 threshold during Asian trading hours. While the largest cryptocurrency briefly surpassed this level, it recorded a significant weekly decline. Concurrently, HYPE, the native token of the decentralized derivatives platform Hyperliquid, captured attention with an 8% increase over the week. This presented a contrasting picture to the broader market, where leading cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum (ETH), XRP, and Solana (SOL) experienced losses over the past seven days.

Despite many major crypto assets registering intraday gains on Sunday, the overall weekly outlook remained bearish, particularly for Bitcoin. Bitcoin largely traded around $63,000 for much of the week, failing to sustain the $65,000 level and shedding approximately $3,000 in value. After dipping below $62,500 in mid-August, a swift rebound helped cap weekly losses below 3.2%. Ethereum saw a 2.1% decline, XRP fell by 3.5%, and Solana experienced drops of up to 3% weekly, while HYPE's ascent highlighted selective capital flows within the altcoin market.

This market divergence indicates that investor risk appetite is gravitating towards specific narratives. Bitcoin's consolidation within the $60,000-$70,000 range has become the third-longest such period in its history, suggesting the market is struggling to establish a definitive direction. Analysts emphasize that a weekly close above $63,220 is crucial for Bitcoin to prevent a deeper downturn. While institutional investor sentiment has turned “extremely bearish,” the overall market sentiment, as indicated by the Crypto Fear & Greed Index, remains in the “fear” zone.

Market movements have also been influenced by macroeconomic factors, including softer-than-expected US jobs data and reduced expectations for Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate hikes. A weaker jobs report had lowered the probability of a near-term rate hike, boosting interest in risk assets. However, Bitcoin failed to mirror the upward momentum of US equities, which reached record highs. Additionally, regulatory uncertainties surrounding the CLARITY Act have continued to exert pressure on the market.

Looking ahead, analysts suggest that reclaiming the $64,000 level would begin to repair much of the technical damage for Bitcoin. However, a brief touch will not suffice; a sustained hold above this level is deemed necessary. Growing open interest (OI) coupled with a lack of matching demand signals a potential long liquidation event for Bitcoin. The market is closely monitoring US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data as the next significant test for risk assets, while the continuation of selective altcoin rallies will depend on broader market conditions.
