Bitcoin Slips to $77,000 After Challenging $80,000 Overnight Rally
Bitcoin saw significant price action, testing the $80,000 mark before retreating to $77,000, as spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $606 million in inflows and Ethereum funds attracted $221 million. This robust institutional demand underpins the recent crypto market rally.
The cryptocurrency market witnessed a notable surge recently, with Bitcoin (BTC) challenging the $80,000 threshold before easing back to the $77,000 range. On August 20, 2026, US spot Bitcoin Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) registered a substantial net inflow of $606.29 million, while spot Ethereum (ETH) ETFs also attracted $221 million in net inflows. These figures represent the largest single-day inflow for Bitcoin ETFs since May 1, underscoring significant institutional interest in the crypto market.
Bitcoin's price soared to a session high of $79,241 during the overnight trading session of August 20-21, marking multi-month highs, but struggled to maintain momentum above the $80,000 level and subsequently pulled back towards $77,000. BlackRock's IBIT fund led the Bitcoin ETF inflows, capturing $502.99 million, accounting for over 80% of the day's total. Fidelity's FBTC followed with $64.74 million and Bitwise's BITB added $26.4 million. This marked the fourth consecutive day of positive inflows for Bitcoin ETFs. In the Ethereum market, BlackRock's ETHA fund recorded the largest inflow of $173.3 million.
These strong inflows come after a period where Bitcoin had largely been range-bound between $62,000 and $66,900 since early July. The market had been characterized by concentrated short positions, with every attempt at a rally met with selling pressure. However, over the past four trading sessions, Bitcoin surged by over 24%, adding more than $14,000 to its value. This rally appears to be driven not solely by short covering but also by genuine spot demand and an improvement in overall market sentiment.
The resurgence in crypto markets has coincided with broader macroeconomic developments. The US Treasury's announcement on August 19, 2026, to double its long-term bond buyback operations, led to a drop in bond yields and a weakening dollar, creating a favorable environment for risk assets like cryptocurrencies. Additionally, supportive statements from President Trump at a White House crypto summit further boosted regulatory optimism. These macroeconomic factors, combined with the influx of institutional capital, have provided a strong foundation for the current rally.
Market analysts hold varying views on the sustainability of Bitcoin's recent recovery. Geoff Kendrick, head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, suggested that investors should position for Bitcoin to reach $100,000 by the end of 2026. However, some experts emphasize that for the rally to be durable, ETF inflows must continue, and organic buying needs to replace forced short covering. The next significant resistance level for Bitcoin is identified around its 2026 high of $97,900. For Ethereum, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) reaching 89.8 has raised concerns about potential overheating in the market.
Cumulative net inflows for spot Bitcoin ETFs have now reached $53.40 billion since their inception, while the total net asset value of Ethereum spot ETFs stands at $13.585 billion. This sustained demand for these funds indicates a growing integration of crypto assets into traditional financial systems. Nevertheless, market volatility and macroeconomic uncertainties are expected to continue influencing price movements in the coming period.
