Bitcoin's wild days are over — Trace Mayer says that's a good thing

Bitcoin’s headline volatility has moderated and, according to Mayer Multiple creator Trace Mayer, that reflects the asset’s maturation rather than a loss of utility. Mayer argues that the market’s “barbell” has become heavier as institutional participation grows, making bitcoin more suitable for corporate balance sheets and family offices.

Mayer points to the mechanics of the options market—particularly covered call selling—as a driver of volatility compression. When institutions sell calls, market makers hedge by selling underlying bitcoin on upside moves, creating a structural cap on rapid price spikes. CoinDesk reports volatility measures falling from peaks around 120 in 2021 to about 35 recently, and places the Mayer Multiple near 0.94, with historical thresholds around 2.4 (tops) and 0.8 (buy zones).

That structural shift affects how market participants allocate capital. Lower realized volatility reduces the operational and governance barriers for trustees and investment committees to hold bitcoin, while derivatives strategies and leveraged ETF products provide avenues for tailored exposure. CoinDesk notes bitcoin trading in the low-to-mid $73k range at the time of reporting, and highlights corporate exposure and ETF activity as liquidity anchors.

Mayer nonetheless flags medium- and long-term risks: inadequate price appreciation could weaken miner economics and network security, and advances in quantum computing remain a theoretical threat to cryptographic protections. Despite these caveats, he maintains a long-term preference for bitcoin’s capped 21 million supply as a comparative advantage versus gold.

From an investment outlook perspective, persistent volatility compression is likely to produce a bifurcated response: diminished short-term speculative returns but increased institutional flows and product innovation over time. Market watchers will monitor options positioning, corporate treasury allocations, and miner revenue trends as the key indicators that determine whether bitcoin’s transition to a more “boring” store of value continues.
