Bitcoin Long-Term Holder Supply Masking Buyer Drought - CryptoQuant

Blockchain analytics firm CryptoQuant reports that Bitcoin’s long-term holder (LTH) supply has reached record levels, a development the firm interprets less as fresh conviction and more as evidence of a shortage of new buyers entering the market.

CryptoQuant’s analysis cites an LTH supply near 15.8 million BTC and a decline in short-term holder supply of roughly 2.2 million BTC since December, driven in part by large reclassifications (about 900,000 BTC moved beyond the 155‑day holding threshold). The firm also notes whale balances (wallets holding 1,000–10,000 BTC) are contracting year‑over‑year, with monthly growth stalled since February.

The data have market implications: at the time of reporting Bitcoin traded near $73,500, and on‑chain indicators alongside weakening spot ETF flows point to thinner market turnover. Several data providers logged a shift in May from ETF accumulation to outflows, a dynamic that can leave prices vulnerable when the demand pipe narrows.

In a broader macro-financial context, these trends reflect the evolving structure of crypto demand since the advent of spot ETFs: institutional and ETF channels now play an outsized role in absorbing supply, while shrinking short-term liquidity can amplify price moves. Mainstream outlets have highlighted persistent demand pressure and the potential for reduced buyer participation to keep volatility elevated amid adverse macro conditions.

Market participants and analysts read CryptoQuant’s findings as a cautionary signal. If ETF flows and spot demand remain weak, expect a period of range-bound trading with heightened sensitivity to flow shocks; conversely, renewed buying from ETFs or retail could convert the latent long-term supply into a genuine accumulation-driven scarcity that supports higher levels. Monitoring ETF flows, on‑chain LTH/short-term metrics and prediction‑market odds will be critical in the coming weeks for assessing trend durability.
