Beehive Industries Scales 3D-Printed Jet Engine Production
Beehive Industries is moving into full-scale production of 3D-printed jet engines with U.S. Air Force backing. The company aims to produce over 8,000 engines annually through a $70 million Ohio expansion and significant equipment investments, critical for uncrewed aerial systems.
Beehive Industries is significantly ramping up its production of 3D-printed jet engines for uncrewed aerial defense applications, transitioning to full-rate manufacturing. This strategic move is supported by funding from the U.S. Air Force and a substantial $70 million investment in Ohio. The company targets an annual production capacity exceeding 8,000 engines, aiming to provide rapid and cost-effective solutions for critical defense industry needs.
The company's expansion is bolstered by a $29.7 million U.S. Air Force contract to accelerate the development of its "Frenzy" engine family, specifically the Frenzy 8 model. This contract covers vehicle integration, flight testing, and qualification processes, as well as initial manufacturing and testing of the smaller Frenzy 6 engine. Previously, Beehive Industries secured a $12.46 million U.S. Air Force contract in October 2024 for Frenzy engine development and testing. These engines are designed specifically for uncrewed aerial systems and munitions.
To meet its ambitious production goals, Beehive has committed over $50 million to metal additive manufacturing equipment. This includes the acquisition of 30 new EOS M4 ONYX metal 3D printers from German manufacturer EOS, increasing its total EOS fleet to 50 systems. Additionally, the company has ordered ultra-large-format NXG 600E printers from Nikon SLM Solutions for larger aerospace and space structures. Beehive also acquired two precision machine shops in the Cincinnati area, Able Tool Corporation and Planet Products Corporation, establishing a Production Machining Center of Excellence in Ohio. This vertically integrated strategy aims to keep all processes, from engine design to metal additive manufacturing, machining, assembly, and testing, in-house, thereby minimizing supply chain disruptions.
This expansion is closely tied to the U.S. Pentagon's efforts to strengthen the domestic defense industrial base and achieve its objective of "affordable mass." While traditional jet propulsion systems often require years for development and production, Beehive's 3D printing-based, vertically integrated manufacturing model promises to compress these timelines to months. This significantly enhances the Pentagon's ability to respond more rapidly and flexibly to evolving threat landscapes. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine emphasized that this investment positions the state at the forefront of producing engines for military needs.
The $70 million investment in Ohio is expected to create over 200 new skilled jobs in the state. This development reinforces Ohio's strong position in aerospace and defense technologies and solidifies its role as a hub for additive manufacturing. Announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, this expansion is set to boost the company's operational momentum. Industry analysts anticipate that such investments will pave the way for more widespread adoption of 3D printing technology in the defense and space sectors in the future.
