Balance Stablecoin Crashes 99% After Oracle Exploit Drains Bitcoin Vaults
The Balance Coin (BLC) algorithmic stablecoin plummeted over 99% on July 22, 2026, following an oracle manipulation. An attacker exploited a fake Bitcoin price to liquidate vaults, stealing $912,000.
The algorithmic stablecoin Balance Coin (BLC) saw its value plunge by over 99% on July 22, 2026, dropping from near its $1 peg to approximately $0.0014 after becoming the target of a critical oracle exploit. This dramatic collapse highlighted once again the vital importance of oracle security within the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem. The incident effectively wiped out nearly all of the Balance Protocol's nominal market capitalization, which stood at around $3.5 million.
The attack specifically targeted the Balance Protocol's Median Oracle mechanism, which feeds Bitcoin (BTCB) price data into the system. The assailant manipulated this oracle to inject an artificially low Bitcoin price into the protocol. This fabricated price information triggered the unwarranted liquidation of Bitcoin-backed collateral vaults that should have remained secure. According to analyses from security firm SlowMist, the attacker executed this exploit in a single transaction, swapping the assets obtained from these liquidations across various platforms, ultimately profiting approximately $912,000 to $915,000 from 42DAO, the governance entity behind Balance Protocol.
Balance Protocol was designed to allow users to deposit Bitcoin-backed collateral to mint the BLC stablecoin, with vaults automatically liquidated if the collateral's value fell below a predefined threshold. However, blockchain security firms like SlowMist and PeckShield indicated that the protocol lacked crucial security features such as price deviation checks, maximum drawdown limits, or liquidation delay mechanisms. These deficiencies allowed the attacker to perform instantaneous and unverified liquidations using the manipulated price feed.
This event has intensified concerns regarding oracle security in decentralized finance markets and underscored the inherent fragility of algorithmic stablecoins. Price oracles in the DeFi ecosystem are essential for relaying external data to the blockchain, enabling the functioning of decentralized applications. The manipulability of these oracles poses a significant threat to the stability of an entire protocol. Previous oracle attacks in the past demonstrate that such vulnerabilities continue to be an ongoing risk for the broader DeFi sector.
Analysts and market observers are warning that such incidents could lead to increased scrutiny from regulatory bodies on DeFi platforms and necessitate the development of more robust security measures by protocols. Moving forward, decentralized finance projects are expected to adopt enhanced measures, including multiple data sources, delay mechanisms, and more sophisticated validation processes, to fortify their oracle systems. Failure to do so could continue to erode investor confidence and exacerbate market instability.
