Balance Coin Plunges 99% After $915K Exploit Hits 42DAO
Balance Coin (BLC) lost over 99% of its value following a suspected exploit targeting 42DAO, the decentralized autonomous organization governing the Balance Protocol ecosystem. Blockchain security firms linked the incident to a $915,000 exploit, causing the algorithmic stablecoin to depeg from the dollar.
Balance Coin (BLC), an algorithmic stablecoin, suffered a massive blow, losing over 99% of its value after a reported exploit targeted 42DAO, the decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that governs the Balance Protocol ecosystem. The cryptocurrency's dramatic plunge and loss of its dollar peg sent shockwaves through the market.
According to statements from blockchain security firms PeckShield and SlowMist, the exploit resulted in an approximate loss of $915,000. PeckShield indicated that the depeg of BLC was a direct consequence of this exploit on 42DAO, while SlowMist reported that the attack was executed by manipulating an abnormally low BTCB price provided by a Median Oracle. The attacker reportedly utilized the 'poke' mechanism of the Spotter contract and the 'bark' mechanism of the Dog contract to carry out this price manipulation.
Following these developments, BLC plummeted from $0.9954 to as low as $0.001358, according to CoinMarketCap data, triggering panic among investors. This incident amplifies concerns regarding the stability of algorithmic stablecoins and once again highlights the vulnerabilities within decentralized finance (DeFi) markets, particularly the risks of price oracle manipulation. Such events tend to negatively impact investor confidence and increase market volatility.
This attack serves as another stark reminder of the persistent security vulnerabilities within decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols and DAO structures. Previous major incidents, such as the 2016 “The DAO” hack, demonstrated the devastating consequences of smart contract flaws and attacks on governance mechanisms. Despite its rapid growth, the DeFi space continues to grapple with new and sophisticated attack vectors, including flash loan attacks and oracle manipulations.
Analysts and market observers note that such incidents continue to pose significant challenges for blockchain security and decentralized governance models. To prevent similar attacks in the future, it is crucial for DeFi projects and DAOs to implement more robust security measures, such as multi-signature wallets, timelocks for governance proposals, and rigorous independent third-party code audits. This event reinforces calls for elevated security standards across the ecosystem and urges investors to exercise greater caution.
