A reported system malfunction forced multiple Apollo Go robotaxis operated by Chinese tech firm Baidu to stop in traffic in Wuhan on Tuesday night, with local police saying more than 100 vehicles were affected. Authorities said there were no reported injuries.

Police and local media footage show calls to authorities began around 9 p.m., and videos circulating on social platforms depicted vehicles stopped in middle lanes of elevated ring roads while other traffic passed. Passengers described in-car screens displaying "driving system malfunction" messages, delayed customer-support responses and some waiting up to an hour before being assisted or exiting the vehicle.

From a market perspective, the incident raises operational and reputational risks for Baidu. The company operates hundreds of robotaxis in Wuhan and runs more than 1,000 vehicles overall, making the service a material part of its autonomous mobility ambitions and international expansion plans. Any regulatory scrutiny or rollback could affect growth forecasts for the unit.

The outage follows prior safety incidents in the sector — including isolated crashes, a robotaxi falling into a construction pit and other fleets stalling due to power outages — which have already prompted discussions on the readiness of driverless services for large-scale urban deployment. Such precedents increase pressure on operators to demonstrate robust fail-safes and incident response.

Analysts and investors will watch for Baidu's formal incident report, regulatory feedback from Hubei and Wuhan authorities, and any operational fixes or software patches. In the near term, the key questions are whether the malfunction reflects systemic vulnerabilities and how quickly Baidu can restore user confidence while limiting potential financial or regulatory costs.
