Aviva PLC, the British insurance and asset management giant, showcased a robust performance in its first-half 2026 financial results, reporting a significant increase in operating profit. The company announced that its operating profit for the six months ending June 30 surged by 24% to £1.33 billion. This figure comfortably exceeded analysts' average forecasts of £1.26 billion, reaffirming the company's strong growth trajectory.

A key driver behind Aviva's strong performance was the strategic acquisition of motor insurer Direct Line, coupled with robust demand within its general insurance segment. The company highlighted significant progress in the integration of Direct Line, including the transfer of all employees and approximately £5 billion in assets to Aviva Investors. This integration has already yielded £100 million in annualised cost synergies, with expectations to achieve over £350 million in capital synergies by year-end.

General insurance premiums climbed by 29% to £8.1 billion, while UK and Ireland general insurance premiums saw a 42% increase, boosted by the Direct Line acquisition. Furthermore, net inflows into the company's wealth management division rose by 32% to £7.6 billion, pushing assets under management to £261 billion. Aviva's undiscounted combined operating ratio (COR) also improved by 1.3 percentage points to 93.3%, indicating enhanced underwriting discipline.

These strong financial outcomes demonstrate Aviva's resilience in navigating market volatility. The company has successfully steered through market fluctuations exacerbated by the Middle East conflict and softening property and catastrophe rates, leveraging its diversified business model. CEO Amanda Blanc emphasised that Aviva's extensive customer base of 25 million, market-leading brand, and rich data insights provide significant competitive advantages for future growth.

Aviva remains confident in meeting its three-year financial targets by 2028, which include an 11% compound annual growth rate in operating earnings per share (EPS) and an IFRS return on equity (RoE) exceeding 20%. The company stated it is well-positioned to sustain long-term earnings growth, particularly in high-growth areas such as wealth, UK and Canada general insurance, global corporate and specialty, and health and protection. These expectations point towards a continued stable performance for the company in the foreseeable future.
