Australian PM Albanese to Address New US Tariffs with Trump Amid Trade Tensions

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has strongly condemned new US tariffs on Australian exports, labeling the decision as unjustified, and stated his intention to discuss the matter directly with former President Donald Trump. Effective July 23, 2026, Washington imposed an additional 12.5% tariff on many Australian goods, citing Australia's alleged failure to effectively enforce a prohibition on products made with forced labor in its supply chains. This move casts a shadow over the robust trade relationship between the two long-standing allies.

The decision by the US Trade Representative (USTR) followed an investigation under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act, replacing a previous temporary 10% global tariff. Australia is among 37 economies subjected to the 12.5% tariff, while other nations like the UK, India, and Canada face a lower 10% rate. Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell echoed Albanese's sentiment, emphasizing that these tariffs are inconsistent with the Australia-US Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA) and should be removed immediately.

The direct impact of these new tariffs on Australia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) may be limited due to the country's diversified export profile. However, specific sectors, particularly pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, are expected to face significant risks, with proposed tariffs in these areas potentially soaring to between 150% and 250% over the next 18 months.
