Apple, the U.S. technology giant, has filed a lawsuit against leading artificial intelligence company OpenAI and two of its former employees, accusing them of stealing the company's trade secrets and confidential information in an effort to develop new consumer hardware. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that OpenAI engaged in a coordinated effort to access Apple's product designs, manufacturing processes, and supply chain strategies.

At the core of Apple's accusations are Tang Tan, OpenAI's Chief Hardware Officer and former Apple VP of Product Design, and Chang Liu, a former Apple electrical engineer. The lawsuit claims that Tan, while still employed at Apple, instructed job candidates applying to OpenAI to bring confidential Apple hardware parts to their interviews. Furthermore, Liu is accused of not returning an Apple-issued laptop after leaving the company and exploiting a security bug to download dozens of confidential hardware-related files concerning unreleased products. Apple contends that OpenAI's hardware strategy is “rotten to its core by its illegal reliance on misappropriated trade secrets” and is “unlawful.”

While the two companies announced a high-profile partnership in 2024 to integrate OpenAI's ChatGPT AI model into the iPhone's operating system, Apple explicitly stated that this new lawsuit is unrelated to that AI integration agreement. The lawsuit focuses on OpenAI's hardware development efforts, which are being led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. OpenAI acquired Ive's startup, io Products, for $6.5 billion last year, signaling the AI giant's intent to enter the hardware market.

This development escalates the long-standing competition within the technology sector to a new level. In its complaint, Apple alleged that OpenAI's hardware business “now rests on the shakiest of foundations, rotten to its core by its illegal reliance on misappropriated trade secrets.” Such legal battles can have significant impacts on companies' market valuations and investor confidence. Coming at a time when OpenAI is reportedly preparing for a potential initial public offering, this lawsuit could also affect the company's future financial plans.

Analysts suggest that this lawsuit could have important implications not only for the two tech giants but for the entire artificial intelligence industry's future. Apple is seeking an immediate halt to the use of its trade secrets, the return of all confidential materials, and monetary damages for the harm suffered. OpenAI has denied the allegations, stating that it has no interest in other companies' trade secrets and remains focused on building innovative technology. The progression of the lawsuit and its ripple effects across technology markets are keenly awaited.
