Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has escalated its legal battle with the U.S. government by asking a federal appeals court to pause the Pentagon’s decision to designate the firm as a “supply‑chain risk.” The request comes after weeks of dispute between the company and the U.S. Department of Defense over restrictions governing how Anthropic’s AI tools can be used by the military.

In early March 2026, the Pentagon formally labeled Anthropic a supply‑chain risk, a designation that could effectively block the company’s AI systems—particularly its Claude chatbot—from being used by the Defense Department and its contractors. The move requires defense vendors working with the Pentagon to certify that they are not using Anthropic’s technology in projects tied to the military, with a phased removal of existing systems.

The conflict centers on safety guardrails imposed by Anthropic on its AI models. The company has refused to remove restrictions that prohibit the use of its technology for fully autonomous weapons without human oversight and for large‑scale domestic surveillance of U.S. citizens.
