Anthropic Secures $9.1 Billion Cloud Deal with Riot Platforms, Shares Soar
AI firm Anthropic has signed a 20-year, $9.1 billion cloud computing agreement with Bitcoin miner Riot Platforms. This strategic deal addresses Anthropic's growing compute power demand, accelerates Riot's pivot to AI infrastructure, and sent Riot's shares surging by 25%.
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has inked a significant 20-year, $9.1 billion cloud computing deal with Riot Platforms, a former Bitcoin miner, marking a pivotal moment in the AI infrastructure landscape. This strategic agreement is set to secure Anthropic's escalating demand for compute power while significantly accelerating Riot Platforms' transformation from cryptocurrency mining into an AI data center service provider. Following the announcement, Riot Platforms' shares experienced a substantial surge of approximately 25% in after-hours trading.
Under the terms of the agreement, Riot Platforms will provide Anthropic with 191 megawatts (MW) of computing capacity from its Rockdale campus in Texas. The phased deployment is expected to bring 96 MW online by December 2027, with the full 191 MW operational by June 2028. The contract, which runs through June 2048, also includes two five-year extension options, potentially increasing the total value of the deal to as much as $16.1 billion. To facilitate this large-scale infrastructure development, Riot has secured interim financing of $573 million from Morgan Stanley. The company previously disclosed this data center agreement without naming the customer, noting it contributed to its second-quarter revenue exceeding estimates.
The market's enthusiastic response, evidenced by the sharp rise in Riot Platforms' stock, underscores the heightened investor interest in the artificial intelligence sector. This surge reflects confidence in companies that are transitioning from more volatile business models, like Bitcoin mining, to providing stable, long-term revenue streams through AI infrastructure. The deal is a clear indication of Riot's broader strategy to repurpose its existing power and data center infrastructure to capitalize on the burgeoning AI boom.
The immense computing power required to develop and operate advanced AI models has become a critical priority for companies in the sector. Leading AI firms like Anthropic are in a race to secure large-scale infrastructure agreements to meet growing customer demand and maintain a competitive edge. According to Bloomberg, Anthropic has recently signed a $10 billion deal with infrastructure startup Volta Infra Holdings and agreed to acquire nearly $45 billion worth of computing from Elon Musk's xAI in May. Additionally, Anthropic has existing multi-billion-dollar agreements with major cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud.
Market analysts anticipate that AI companies' efforts to secure compute power will continue in the foreseeable future. The pivot of some Bitcoin mining firms, particularly during periods of lower profitability, to redirect their idle energy and infrastructure capacity towards AI data center services, is fostering new business models in this space. The case of Riot Platforms clearly demonstrates the positive impact of this transformation on company valuation and revenue streams. This trend is expected to both support the growth of the AI sector and create new opportunities for existing infrastructure providers.
