Anthropic's Claude Mythos Release Raises Crypto Security Concerns
Anthropic's Fable 5 release of its Claude Mythos AI model has heightened security concerns in the crypto world. Moonrock Capital founder Simon Dedic warned that the model could reduce the cost of finding smart contract vulnerabilities to zero, issuing a serious risk warning for unaudited DeFi protocols.
AI company Anthropic has launched Fable 5, the first public version of its powerful Claude Mythos AI model. While the company stated it has equipped the model with significant safeguards and guardrails to prevent misuse, crypto community members have expressed concerns, particularly regarding potential risks in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector. The model includes safety measures that reroute queries on certain topics, such as cybersecurity, to the earlier Claude Opus 4.8 model.
Anthropic previously announced that its Mythos model had identified over 10,000 high- or critical-severity vulnerabilities in "systemically important software." It also reportedly found approximately 6,200 high- or critical-severity vulnerabilities in over 1,000 open-source projects. While these capabilities demonstrate the model's effectiveness in general software security, there are concerns it could pose new threats to crypto assets.
Simon Dedic, founder of Moonrock Capital and a venture capitalist, posted on X (formerly Twitter) warning that Fable 5 could reduce the cost and skill required to find exploitable flaws in smart contracts to "basically zero." Dedic stated that unaudited DeFi protocols would become "sitting ducks" and known exploits could be repeatedly replayed on forked projects. He advised crypto users to revoke wallet approvals, remove as much value as possible from protocols, and move crypto to fresh hardware wallets.
Conversely, Michael Egorov, co-founder of Curve Finance (CRV), argued that the threat Claude Mythos poses to crypto might be "overblown." Egorov suggested that Mythos's success in finding bugs in general software might not directly translate to DeFi smart contracts, which typically contain less code and possess unique logic. According to Egorov, operational security (OpSec) vulnerabilities, such as attacks on multisignature wallet configurations or front-end supply chains, could represent a greater and more immediate threat.
AI-powered cyberattacks have become a growing concern in crypto markets recently. For instance, Claude Opus 4.8's identification of a critical vulnerability in the Zcash (ZEC) network led to a more than 35% drop in the privacy-focused cryptocurrency's value. Industry leaders like Manuel Aráoz have even claimed that "all of DeFi is unsafe" due to AI shifting the security balance heavily towards attackers. AI tools can rapidly scan complex software systems, uncover hidden flaws, and shorten the time required for attacks.
Markets are closely monitoring cybersecurity risks as AI technologies advance. Anthropic's pricing for Fable 5 and the more restricted Claude Mythos 5 models, based on tokens, indicates the cost of accessing these advanced capabilities. Analysts emphasize that AI enhances both defensive and offensive capacities in cybersecurity, and the crypto ecosystem must invest in more robust security protocols and continuous audits to adapt to this new era.
