Anthropic–Pentagon dispute raises major risks for tech industry

A growing dispute between U.S. artificial intelligence company Anthropic and the Pentagon is escalating into a major legal and policy battle with implications for the wider technology industry. In late February 2026, the U.S. Department of Defense designated Anthropic a “supply‑chain risk to national security,” a move that effectively blocks the company’s technology from use in military systems and by defense contractors.

At the same time, U.S. President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s technology, including its Claude AI models, with a six‑month phase‑out period. Microsoft and a group of former senior U.S. military officials have also submitted court filings supporting Anthropic, warning that using supply‑chain risk tools in a contract dispute could create damaging precedents for the technology sector and government procurement.
