AMD Acquires Taalas, AI Chip Startup Hardwiring Models into Silicon
Semiconductor giant AMD has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Taalas, a Toronto-based startup specializing in hardwiring AI models directly into chips to accelerate inference processes. This strategic move aims to bolster AMD's position in the rapidly growing AI market. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and it remains subject to regulatory approvals.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a leading player in the semiconductor industry, has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Taalas, a Canadian startup specializing in hardwiring artificial intelligence (AI) models directly into silicon. This strategic move reinforces AMD's objective to deliver specialized solutions for the rapidly expanding AI inference market and is part of the company's broader efforts to strengthen its AI portfolio.
Toronto-based Taalas is recognized as a pioneer in specialized AI inference silicon, developing technology that optimizes AI model dataflows to significantly reduce compute and memory bottlenecks associated with general-purpose architectures. The company developed the HC1 chip, which hardwires models like Meta's Llama 3.1 8B directly onto its silicon, trading flexibility for extreme efficiency. Taalas was founded by former AMD employees and Tenstorrent leaders, including Ljubisa Bajic (CEO), Lejla Bajic (COO), and Drago Ignjatovic (CTO). Prior to the acquisition, the company had secured substantial funding of $219 million.
According to Vamsi Boppana, Senior Vice President of AMD's AI Group, Taalas's technology and engineering team will enhance AMD's AI portfolio by delivering differentiated inference performance and efficiency. AMD plans to integrate Taalas's technology into its accelerator roadmap and develop system-level solutions alongside its existing full-stack AI platform, which includes AMD Instinct GPUs, AMD EPYC CPUs, and the ROCm software stack. This integration aims to dramatically boost AI efficiency through custom silicon capable of replacing general-purpose graphics processing units (GPUs) for specific tasks.
This acquisition marks the latest in AMD's aggressive growth strategy in the AI sector. Over the past year, the company has acquired the team behind Canadian AI chip firm Untether AI and the FastFlowLM team to accelerate large language models on its Ryzen AI NPUs. Furthermore, AMD is strengthening its position in the AI chip market through partnerships with Cerebras to boost the inference capabilities of its Helios rack-scale systems and plans to invest up to five billion dollars in Anthropic.
Taalas's proprietary technology, by eliminating memory bottlenecks in AI inference processes and integrating the model directly into the chip, can achieve up to 17,000 tokens per second, offering performance multiples faster than current leading platforms. This could translate into significant economic benefits for data centers and cloud service providers. Analysts suggest that as AI workloads become increasingly specialized, purpose-built hardware solutions like those from Taalas could gain significant market share, substantially boosting AMD's competitive edge in this domain. The deal is expected to close following customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
