Alphabet's (GOOGL) Q2 Earnings Beat Expectations, But Increased AI Spending Divides Markets
Alphabet exceeded second-quarter financial forecasts, yet its shares saw a post-earnings dip due to significantly raised capital expenditure projections for AI investments. Strong revenue growth and accelerating cloud performance continue to underpin the company's long-term outlook.
Tech giant Alphabet (GOOGL) announced its second-quarter financial results on July 22, 2026, significantly surpassing market expectations. The company reported earnings per share (EPS) of $9.11, considerably higher than analysts' estimates of $2.87-$2.88. Revenues surged by 24% year-over-year to $119.8 billion, also beating forecasts of $116.51-$116.9 billion. This marks Alphabet's 12th consecutive quarter of double-digit revenue growth.
Despite the robust earnings report, Alphabet shares experienced a decline of 3.4% to 4.24% in after-hours trading. The primary reason for this dip was the company's announcement of sharply increased capital expenditure (CAPEX) plans for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, raising concerns about near-term margin pressure. Alphabet revised its full-year 2026 CAPEX forecast upwards to $195 billion-$205 billion, from its previous guidance of $180 billion-$190 billion. Q2 CAPEX alone reached $44.9 billion, a 101% increase from the same period last year.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized that AI investments are "redefining what's possible" across all aspects of the business. The Google Cloud segment saw a significant acceleration in growth, with revenues surging 82% to $24.8 billion, driven by strong demand for AI infrastructure and solutions. Search query growth is also being fueled by popular AI features. It was noted that nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies are utilizing Gemini Enterprise, and the Gemini app now boasts 950 million monthly active users.
This substantial increase in capital expenditures resulted in the company's free cash flow turning negative, reaching -$5.86 billion in the second quarter. This development heightened investor scrutiny regarding the returns on these massive AI infrastructure investments. Markets are closely monitoring how Alphabet's aggressive spending will impact profitability in the short term.
These developments are seen as a reflection of the broader investment trends within the AI sector. Alphabet's escalating CAPEX could signal sustained demand for AI infrastructure and semiconductors. However, with other major tech companies also outlining similar ambitious investment plans, competition and cost pressures within the industry are expected to intensify in the coming period.
Analysts, despite the immediate post-earnings stock dip, largely maintain a positive outlook on Alphabet. The consensus rating from most analysts remains 'Buy' or 'Strong Buy', with an average 12-month price target ranging from $414.54 to $437.79. This suggests significant upside potential from current levels. Analysts believe that Google Cloud's robust growth, a substantial backlog of orders, and the company's leadership in AI will continue to drive long-term value.
