Alibaba's Net Income Plunges 75% as AI Investments Weigh Heavily

Chinese e-commerce and technology giant Alibaba Group (BABA) announced its financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The company's net income plummeted by 75% year-over-year to RMB 10.44 billion (approximately US$1.54 billion). This sharp decline was primarily attributed to aggressive investments in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, a decrease in income from operations, and reduced net gains from the disposal of investments. Following the announcement, Alibaba's U.S.-listed shares experienced volatility, falling between 1% and 4% in premarket trading, raising investor concerns about the company's profitability outlook.

Despite the profit plunge, Alibaba's revenue rose 9% year-over-year to RMB 268.95 billion (approximately US$39.64 billion), driven by strong demand for AI-fueled growth in its cloud business. However, income from operations decreased by 57% to RMB 15.16 billion, and adjusted EBITA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, and Amortization) fell 30% to RMB 27.33 billion, largely due to higher technology investments. Capital expenditures surged by 75% year-over-year to RMB 67.68 billion (approximately US$9.98 billion), reflecting the company's substantial investments in AI infrastructure. Furthermore, the company reported a negative free cash flow outflow of RMB 44.67 billion (approximately US$6.6 billion) for the quarter.

The net income decline was also influenced by a decrease in net gains from the disposal of investments and a reduction in net gains from mark-to-market changes of its equity investments. Conversely, Alibaba's cloud and AI business demonstrated robust growth, with AI Cloud and compute services revenue increasing by 45%. AI-related product revenue continued its impressive streak, achieving triple-digit growth for the twelfth consecutive quarter. Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu emphasized that the company is experiencing strong demand for its full-stack AI products and services.

The volatility in Alibaba's U.S.-listed shares post-earnings reflects market concerns regarding the impact of AI investments on short-term profitability. While the company aggressively pursues AI expansion, its traditional e-commerce operations continue to face headwinds from subdued consumer spending in China, adding pressure on margins. Analysts note that this strategic shift, while potentially beneficial for long-term competitive advantage, is currently creating adverse effects on near-term financial metrics.

Alibaba's aggressive AI investment strategy aims to bolster its long-term growth potential and establish it as a key player in the global AI race. The company has committed tens of billions of dollars towards AI infrastructure, including chips, data centers, and AI agents, to compete with leading U.S. firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Alibaba has indicated that its capital expenditure for AI infrastructure might exceed the previously announced three-year, RMB 380 billion plan, with a target to quintuple cloud and AI revenue to $100 billion over five years. This signifies the company's willingness to prioritize long-term AI expansion over immediate profitability.

Analysts and market observers hold diverse expectations regarding the future returns on Alibaba's substantial AI investments. Some believe that these investments will become a powerful growth engine as AI commercialization accelerates, while others caution that short-term profitability pressures may persist amidst a slowing Chinese economy and increasing competition. Alibaba CFO Toby Xu stated that as synergies across core businesses deepen and AI monetization ramps up, the company gains greater strategic and financial flexibility to make disciplined and sustained investments in full-stack AI capabilities. The company's commitment to AI stands out as a strategic priority aimed at solidifying its position in the industry.
